Sonic 2 Advanced Edit

By Team AE

Sonic 2 Advanced Edit features 7 entirely new zones, each full of unique enemies and with a boss whose gameplay varies depending on which character you play as. Playable characters are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy. Furthermore as bonus content, the hack features the 5 zones from the 2008 release, brushed up to be fully playable. Upon completing the 7 main zones, you obtain a code to access the level select from which you can play the bonus zones by selecting "South Island 1".

There are 69 big rings scattered throughout the 7 main zones. Collect 7 of them to gain the ability to turn super once you have at least 50 rings in any given level.

Controls:

  • Sonic, Tails, Knuckles: As in S3K. (No spindash for Tails.)
  • Amy: A, Down+A: Hammer attacks; B/C, Down+B/C: Jump/Spindash.
  • Super forms: To enable, hold A+B+C while jumping. (No super form for Tails.)
  • Level reset: While paused, hold A+B+C to go to start of the level/last starpost (costs 1 life).

Distribution of the 69 big rings:

  1. Neo South Island: 9
  2. Cosmic City: 16
  3. Bamboo Jungle: 10
  4. Blue Mountain: 11
  5. Robotic Ruin: 9
  6. Dusty Desert: 13
  7. Eggquarium: 1

This is almost certainly the final release of this hack. It has been about 10 years in the making, with very little progress in the last few years due to real-life commitments and rika_chou and qiuu as the only remaining contributors. Many aspects are not exactly as we envisioned due to limited time, but we are quite happy with the result nevertheless.

Hey! Submitter! Can you see this?

This looks like a very good entry, I'm looking forward to judging this.

Natsumi @ 2019-12-02 07:09:27

This looks great so far! Ididn't progress very far yet, mostly just out of time really. However, I did see a TON of graphical glitches, especially with the shields and big ring. Also, the speed shoes made the music slower, come on now such an easy fix :P

Also lots of dodgy level design and object placement. Really, just lacks a lot of polish.

Giovanni @ 2019-12-02 10:25:54

Just 100%ed this as Sonic. Felt like playing the "Sonic Mania" of S2AE.

While I really liked the new levels and objects, the camera effects and the bosses, I had some bad experiences, like a softlock in BJZ2 and RRZ2's lightning effect.

I'd not recommend people with epilepsy to play through RRZ2.

Still, a really solid hack! I enjoyed playing it, and I'm glad it was brought back.

Part 1

This hack is very good, very much. The songs are great and match well with each zone. The level design is magnificent, along with a well-designed layout. All the mechanics that were implemented work very well and the bosses are fun and very well made.

.Things I could find

-If time strikes 9:59:59, instead of sonic dying, the act goes on.

-If you reach the end of Act 1 of each zone with a time of 9:59:59, the finish post will be bugged and you will not be able to finish the act unless you die.

Romulok77 @ 2019-12-02 17:01:53

Part 2

-In Cosmic city act 1, if you reach the end with time of 9:59:59, cross the finish post, go back a little, then turn and jump, the game will crash.

-In bamboo jungle act 1 and 2, if you accelerate the game by 16x, the distant waterfalls, nearby waterfalls and water corridors will stop, as if they were really paralyzed........... don't ask me why I tested that, but I tested it.

Romulok77 @ 2019-12-02 17:03:57

Part 3

-in Blue montain act 2 the game may not load the scenario correctly, if this happens you will have to play until you reach the second checkpoint, then die, so the act will load normally.

-In Dusty desert act 2, if the panning cart catches you while performing a spin dash, then jumping out of the cart, sonic keep rolling and moving on its own.

well ....... that was all.

Ps.: Pitron Where's mario 664?

I'm not really a fan, I like some of the concepts and ideas but the hack is extremely frustrating to play that I really didn't enjoy it all too much.

nick46 @ 2019-12-02 20:53:38

I definitely did not expect this hack to resurface after so long, and am glad its back.

However, there are some issues. Level design and object placement isn't exactly hitting it for me, and graphical glitches are incredibly plentiful.

rika_chou @ 2019-12-02 21:20:50

If possible, can you post screenshots of the graphical glitches? Also what emulator is being used?

We did a ton of testing, but I guess we missed some stuff and I would love to fix it.

Dashaque @ 2019-12-03 02:26:54

Wow I didn't even know rika_chou was still around... holy shit. I played this hack over 10 years ago

I have to say it's come along nicely. I'm enjoying it quite a lot. I've only played as Tails thus far and I do have an issue with his not being able to spindash, but it's not a game breaker. Also was NOT a fan of Bamboo Jungle's boss... Those two things aside this looks absolutely brilliant and I'm loving the tunes. So far I haven't had too many issues with level design

Dashaque @ 2019-12-03 02:28:38

... except a couple areas in Bamboo Jungle. I felt like I got flung into spikes a few times there. A really fun hack so far... I'll surely check out Amy's gameplay next. I'm so glad you included her. I would have picked her first but Tails has always been my go to. I know you said this is pretty much the last build but if you do fix anything or add, I'll be on the look out.

Romulok77 @ 2019-12-03 05:37:59

hello rika_chou! please watch this video: https://youtu.be/NIbNOPXM57A

You will see one of the graphic problems the game has. Please read the description.

lordxernom @ 2019-12-03 08:22:49

After years of waiting, finally we have new version of this lovely hack - I love it. Art is just amazing, but in third zone vines could clash with BG due to same-ish color (because of that I've missed one vine and took me some time to figure it out in Act 2). Music: as much as I love tracks from different Genesis games, I wish every zone could have own composition and it's variation/remix for Act 2. I love new gimmicks and ideas tho. Overall I love this hack.

ElectricSparx @ 2019-12-03 10:34:50

Pleased to see this hack come back from the dead, but this really needed a little bit more testing. I just encountered an area close to the end of Robotic Ruin Act 1 after the underwater segment with a yellow spring that isn't enough to bounce you up back to the terrain you're supposed to be on. Literally no other way to get through, had to use PAR to enable debug to complete the level.

ElectricSparx @ 2019-12-03 10:51:07

Robotic Ruin Act 2 needs an epilepsy warning. Lots of flashing lights is not a good thing. Got stuck in the rising sand in Dusty Desert Act 1, had to use debug to get out of that. Because I had debug enabled, I couldn't access super form despite collecting 7 giant rings. Overall, good hack, just needs more testing and polish.
